Luxury holidays in Medellín

Nestled in the heart of the Aburrá Valley, Medellín has well and truly kicked its former insalubrious reputation to the curb; reinventing itself as Colombia’s cultural hub. Wander through its gridded streets, draped in vibrant flowers, past El Poblado’s locally-owned cafés scented with the rich roasted coffee beans that grow in the surrounding mountains, and ride up to the street-art haven of Comuna 13, one of Medellín’s strongest success stories courtesy of 1,259ft outdoor escalators linking the once dangerous neighbourhood to the city centre. Parque de Las Luces and Plaza Botero are also designed to make you look, filled with distinct Colombian-made sculptures. Fully reformed and raring to go, with its friendly paisas, thrilling nightlife and coruscating colour throughout its barrios, Medellín might be Colombia's second city, but it's coming out on top.

When to go

With average temperatures of 22°C and a climate that’s earned it the nickname ‘City of Eternal Spring’, Medellín is great to visit all year round.

Getting there

  • Planes

Fly into José María Córdova International. Or if you’re travelling within the region, land at domestic hub Olaya Herrera Airport and take a 15-minute cab into the city.
  • Trains

Reformed public transport is a large part of Medellín’s turnaround, with outdoor escalators connecting the city centre to mountainous neighbourhoods, multiple cable-car lines, and a newly developed Metro system (the only one in Colombia) – so getting around this enriching region is easier than ever.
  • Automobiles

Medellín’s gridded (and often gridlocked) city lay-out, combined with overly confident motorists, can make driving frustrating. It’s an option; however, it may be more enjoyable to beat the traffic and zip through the city by cable car.
