Luxury holidays in Marais

Narrow cobbled streets, second-hand bookshops and ivy-clad cafés may lend the Marais the air of an old-world village, but this rive droite spot is as modern-minded as they come. Here, the vintage-shopping scene rivals the designer boutiques, and forward-thinking galleries push the district’s art-world credentials far beyond its famed Museé National Picasso. Add in a few list-topping falafel shops – a memento of the area’s Jewish heritage – and you’ve got a favourite haunt of the city’s cool crowd. When dusk falls, follow them to sax-soundtracked clubs and bustling gay bars; or let one of our boutique Marais stays tempt you to turn in early…

When to go

There’s no bad time to see the City of Lights, although some businesses close in August, when the locals like to take their holidays.

Getting there

  • Planes

Most international flights touch down at Charles de Gaulle Airport, and regional flights land at Paris Orly. It’s around an hour-long taxi ride to the Marais from Orly, and an hour or more from Charles de Gaulle, but buses and trains run regularly from both airports to the city centre for a fraction of the cost.
  • Trains

If you’re coming from London, skip the airports and arrive via Eurostar.
  • Automobiles

Leave the roads to the residents – a trip free of pricey parking and the infamous Périphérique ring road will be much more romantic.
