Luxury holidays in Porto Ercole

Sleepy and secluded, Porto Ercole sits on the peninsula of Monte Argentario, surrounded by crystal-clear coastlines. It’s full of fortress-framed vignettes, picturesque ports and hillsides peppered with citrus trees and wild juniper. The views are best admired from the strada panoramica, a dramatic drive connecting Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano. Just-caught seafood is plentiful here and not to be missed; buy it like a local (fresh off the fishing boats) or let someone else do the hard work for you and head to a harbour-side restaurant. On a day trip to nearby Giglio Island, action aficionados can hike pine-covered trails and sun-seekers can sizzle on the beaches below.

When to go

The summer months are often the busiest and hottest; spring and September have fewer crowds and just as much sunshine.

Getting there

  • Planes

Fly into Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, then it’s an hour and a half or so by car to Porto Ercole. You could also fly into Pisa International Airport, which is just over two hours’ drive away.
  • Trains

Trenitalia and Italo run several daily services to and from Orbetello, which is a 15-minute drive away. Fiumicino Airport is a two-hour rail journey; stations in central Rome, Pisa and Siena are under two hours away; and trains run to cities further away, such as Florence or Naples, too.
  • Automobiles

A car is recommended if you’re planning on exploring the rest of Monte Argentario, plus Grosseto and the Maremma National Park are less than an hour’s drive away.
