Assistant Editor

Mr & Mrs Smith’s tight-knit and hardworking Manhattan team is looking for a talented editor with creative flair to tackle its day-to-day editorial workload. Ideally, you’ll be a watertight copywriter with an iron grip on language and an endless supply of ideas, as well as a passion for marketing the Smith brand to an American audience. You’ll understand what makes the Mr & Mrs Smith brand unique, and have an instinctive affinity with our informal, irreverent tone.

You’ll be working in tandem with another editor in New York, as well as with the support and guidance of our editorial team in London. You should be independent-minded, comfortable taking personal responsibility in a fast-paced workplace for all aspects of Smith content, including compiling hotel profiles, updating site copy, writing marketing copy, generating press content and email dispatches, contributing to Smith’s social media presence and acting as a brand guardian for Smith in the US.

You’ll be expected to take a collaborative role in developing Mr & Mrs Smith’s editorial and branding strategies in America, so it will help if you’ve a contacts book to plunder, a thick skin and a creative streak as wide as the Atlantic.

The role will involve:

  • Writing and fact-checking hotel overviews with insider destination guides for industry-leading travel site smithhotels.com;
  • Editing and proofing hotel and destination content;
  • Copywriting for marketing materials and brand partners – both online and in print;
  • Using our in-house CMS to update all areas of the Smith site and write e-newsletters;
  • Ensuring all content meets house-style guidelines, and sustaining the Smith voice in all content;
  • Compiling blog posts, and collaborating with another editor and the marketing team to mastermind Smith’s social media activity in the Americas.


You’d have to have:

  • Several years of copywriting experience – either print, online or both;
  • A fastidiousness about grammar, spelling, syntax and rhythm that borders on antisocial;
  • Familiarity with CMS systems, and the ability to adapt quickly to new technology;
  • The versatility to write copy for print, web, marketing emails and social media platforms – and an understanding of what makes them different;
  • A gift for snappy heads and sells;
  • Creative flair, good general knowledge and a never-ending stash of ideas;
  • A passion for branding and marketing;
  • An excellent knowledge of global travel and a handle on what makes a boutique hotel worthy of the Smith collection;
  • A valid US work permit;
  • Confidence, flexibility and a seriously good sense of humor.
     

And it would be even better if you had:

  • Proven SEO experience;
  • A background in travel and/or lifestyle publishing;
  • A proven understanding of international language differences;
  • Familiarity with HTML, Photoshop, InDesign and WordPress;
  • First-hand experience of a Smith hotel stay.

Hotel Support Manager

Boutique hotel specialists Mr & Mrs Smith have an opening for a bright, organised and systems-minded Hotel Support Manager to join the New York team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for fostering productive relationships with the hotels featured on the Mr & Mrs Smith sites and will be working closely with the Hotel Partnerships team and Smith’s in-house travel consultants.

As well as meticulous organisation and prioritisation skills, you’ll need an in-depth understanding of the hospitality industry as well as knowledge and experience in hotel distribution. Ideally, you’ll have at least two years’ experience working either in a hotel environment or at an OTA.

Main responsibilities

  • Supporting Smith’s portfolio of hotels by dealing promptly with queries and inquiries
  • Training partners on the use of our proprietary extranet, Smith Availability Management System (SAMS)
  • Loading new properties in North and South America into SAMS and affiliate sites
  • Contributing to the refinement of Smith’s in-house systems and back-end development
  • Assisting the Smith Travel Team with booking queries
  • Building and maintaining a network of strong hotel, channel-manager and distribution-partner relationships
  • Supporting the Hotel Partnerships team to ensure up-to-the-minute availability and competitiveness


Requirements

  • Clear and persuasive phone and email manner
  • Impeccable written and spoken English; fluency in Spanish is highly beneficial
  • Knowledge and experience of online-distribution applications and platforms, in particular Synxis, TravelClick, SiteMinder and RateTiger
  • Hotel experience (Revenue Management) or OTA experience (Market Manager/Coordinator)
  • A valid US work permit
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and systems
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and in the face of deadlines

Travel Consultant

Mr & Mrs Smith is on the lookout for a natural-born travel planner to join our in-bound sales team in New York.

You'll be a consummate hotel geek, and will have the skills to turn around a high volume of telephone enquiries, while providing exceptional travel inspiration and impeccable service. If your friends and family rely on you for vacation planning, and you have a knack for presenting persuasively, then this is the job for you.

You will need:

  • Extensive travel experience, ideally with time spent living overseas
  • Proven salesmanship (travel-related is ideal, but not essential)
  • Excellent rapport-building skills and a track record of customer interaction
  • An understanding of the consumer lifestyle in regards to luxury and style
  • Meticulous attention to detail and administrative skills
  • An ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines
  • A valid US work permit

 Service Consultant
$36K (plus bonus)

Mr & Mrs Smith is looking for an experienced customer service and support professional to join the global service team in our sales department, helping to ensure Smith customers have the best experience possible.

This is a full-time role that will require you to work five days a week (a minimum of four may be possible), including weekends. Working hours will be 11.30am to 7pm on Saturday and Sunday; regular business hours otherwise.

Key responsibilities

  • Providing a high standard of aftersales care, arranging transfers, tickets, etc, as necessary
  • Processing amendments and cancellations to member bookings and supporting Travel Team consultants with admin tasks
  • Responding to enquiries via email, live chat and social media
  • Answering phone calls at weekends
  • Processing accommodation-only bookings for straightforward enquiries
  • Taking detailed briefs on behalf of Travel Team consultants for more complex enquiries
  • Handling customer queries and feedback over the weekend
  • Assisting hoteliers with booking-related queries and resolving any overbookings or rate-parity issues over the weekend
  • Providing ad hoc support to any current projects
  • Ensuring 24/7 emergency contact over the weekend


Skills

Mr & Mrs Smith is on the hunt for switched-on interns to assist our small yet dynamic team in New York. We’re always keen to hear from enthusiastic students and graduates who have an interest in travel and are looking to break into the fields of marketing, PR, journalism and publishing.

Placements are currently available in the following departments:

PR & Marketing
We’re looking for a motivated intern to work with us on a full-time placement for a minimum of two months. This exciting role will involve working closely with our marketing and PR departments and would best suit someone with stellar written and verbal communication skills. Tasks will include compiling press clippings, sourcing images for the web and print features and general travel industry research. You will also assist with ongoing projects involving our brand partnerships, including our high-profile promotions, eDM campaigns and product launches.

Editorial
The search is on for a savvy intern with a flair for writing and web-based publishing to assist our editorial department. This placement is available ideally for five days a week, over two to three months, and will offer a great introduction to the world of boutique hotels, travel writing and both print and online editing. You’ll assist our team with a variety of tasks, including researching and fact-checking insider travel content, providing administrative support and writing short pieces for press and our award-winning website. An English, journalism or communications degree would be highly beneficial, as would familiarity with WordPress or similar software.
