Luxury holidays in Southrop

A Cotswolds village with all the charm that entails, Southrop sits pretty in Gloucestershire’s green and gracious countryside, close to the River Leach. Aside from a small spread of buildings, including Grade-I-listed St Peter’s Church (notable for being Kate Moss’s wedding venue), there’s the Southrop Manor Estate, now home to luxury hotel Thyme and refined, gastropub the Swan. Pastimes include hiking and biking, meeting farm animals, floristry, cookery lessons and such, but you’re also just a short drive away from noble National Trust houses, quaint villages and wildlife parks, plus Britain’s most comely green stretches, naturally.

When to go

In summer (May to August) the quiet roads get a little busier and the tea rooms more packed, so try to aim for late spring or early autumn to avoid the crowds. Weekends tend to be the busiest, too. Christmas is quieter, but amiable for cosy festive breaks.

Getting there

  • Planes

London Heathrow is around a 90-minute drive from Southrop, Gatwick’s a two-hour drive away. Alternatively, fly to Bristol Airport, a 90-minute drive away.
  • Trains

Swindon station, a 40-minute drive away, is the closest. Direct trains arrive in around an hour from London Paddington, Cardiff, Bristol, and Oxford.
  • Automobiles

With limited village bus services and the greenest and loveliest bits set far away from stations, a car is essential for exploring the Cotswolds’ honey-hued hamlets.
