At the hotel

L'Spa, gym, personal training, DVD library, free WiFi throughout, valet parking. In rooms: flatscreen TV, DVD player, iPod dock, pillow menu, Kiehl's toiletries.

Our favourite rooms

The three tiers of suites all flaunt lashings of marble, black parquet floors, white leather headboards, peek-a-boo bathrooms and carved Balinese panels on the ceiling. Splash out on a Luxe Suite for extra room, a work area and a sexy freestanding bath tub at the edge of the bedroom.

Set beside the restaurant on the ground floor, the indoor swimming pool looks spectacular at night.

Packing tips

Bring your yoga kit, swimwear and designer gear for bar-hopping by night. Leave suitcase space to take home Seminyak's boutique booty.

Organic treatments and mood-soothing massages are the order of the day at neighbouring L'Spa. Plus, there's a yoga studio with twice-daily stretch sessions, and a dedicated mani/pedi room overlooking the spa's private pool.

Children are welcome, though the mature mood will suit self-contained teens best. Rooms can accommodate baby cribs, but not extra beds; there are interconnecting suites for older families. Kids' menus and highchairs are available in the restaurant.

Hotel Restaurant

Set on a mezzanine floor above the lobby, sleek all-day diner Lola is your go-to gal for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a Eurasian twist from chef Rutger Nohl. Expect a cool take on Continental, such as foie gras terrine with apple and mango chutney, or caramelized pork belly with papaya salad. From late September, the teppanyaki grill and tandoor oven will be fired up at lofty rooftop eatery Luna Bar & Restaurant, a stylish space blessed with paddy field and distant beach views.

Hotel Bar

With a name that conjures images of a Tokyo hotel with rooms by the hour, poolside Love Bar turns up the heat with cool creations from the in-house mixologist. Try the signature Grande L of vodka, raspberries, basil and chilli.

Last orders

Drink and dine at Luna until 1am; early-riser Lola calls it quits at 11pm.

Room service

Available around the clock: you can order from Lola's line-up from 7am to 11pm, or Luna's list from 5pm to 11pm. Beyond that, there's an overnight menu of Indonesian and western snacks.

Eat, drink, see, do: local favourites and more…

Worth getting out of bed for

You're just a five-minute drive from scene-stealing Seminyak's beaches, bars and boutiques, so most of your time is going to be spent strolling around here. The hotel's free shuttle bus will ferry you back and forth.

If you fancy venturing further afield, L Hotel can arrange tours and day-trips, whether you favour four legs or two wheels. Try horseriding treks on the beach and gentle elephant safaris in the Taro jungle, or come over all hardcore with a Harley Davidson ride across the island.

Aquatic types should sign up for rafting on the rapid-flowing Ayung River, surfing just off Seminyak Beach, or a two-day diving course at blissful Barat National Park.

Local restaurants

Pander to your pan-Asian cravings at Mama San (+ 62 (0)361 730 436; on Jalan Raya Kerobokan. This edgy restaurant and lounge bar dishes up fab contemporary food including crispy pork ribs, tangy Vietnamese salads and daring dim sum. Master mixologist Joel Fraser shakes up tempting tropical cocktails, such as coconut mojitos and passionfruit martinis.

Latin lovers should seek out elegant seaside restaurant La Lucciola (+62 (0)361 730 838) beside Petitenget Temple, a perennially popular spot thanks to its mellow vibe and delicious Mediterranean fare.

Local bars

No visit to Bali is complete without a night spent propping up the bar at Potato Head Beach Club (+62 (0)361 473 7979; on Jalan Petitenget. This is where all the cool kids come to play, cutting a path between the breezy restaurant/bar, palm-dotted lawns and infinity pool that leads down to the sea.

Another must is sunset cocktails at Ku De Ta, at 9 Jalan Kayu Aya in Seminyak (+62 (0)361 736969;, which combines a seductive beach club, lounge bar and restaurant on the waterfront.

Local cafés

Sip tea with royalty at Biku (+62 (0)361 857 0888), an enchanting 150-year-old Javanese teak joglo house owned by Princess Asri Kerthyasi of Ubud, and her son, Tjok Gde Kerthyasa, a tea master. High tea is the main draw – start with a limited-edition Javanese tea and a three-tiered platter of house-baked sweets and sandwiches.

L Hotel Seminyak

Jalan Raya Petitenget, No. 8L, Seminyak, Bali, 80361

Located on Jalan Petitenget at the heart of Seminyak, L Hotel is 10 kilometres from Bali's main airport.

Ngurah Rai Airport (, just south of capital Denpasar, is your nearest international hub, serving flights from Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Australia. You can buy a Visa on Arrival, if required, which costs US$25 for 30 days (ideally bring cash).

You can rent a car to explore the island easily enough (although you’ll need to pick up a tourist driving licence), but given Balinese drivers’ rather ‘informal’ approach to the rules of the road, it’s not exactly recommended. There's free parking at the hotel if you do come with your own wheels.

L Hotel Seminyak

Every hotel is visited personally by members of our team and given the Smith seal of approval. As soon as our anonymous reviewers have returned from a stay at this luxury Seminyak stay, a full account of their beach break will be with you. In the meantime, just to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick postcard from L Hotel Seminyak in Bali...

What's love got to do with it? Well, at L Hotel Seminyak the L-word seems to pop up everywhere, from the sweetly named Love Bar, a prime position for sunset sips, to the romance-heavy Love Corner, a secluded table for swooning duos.

When the personable butler team isn't playing Cupid, they're kept busy serving guests evening cocktails and canapés, arranging elephant safaris or day-trips to top Bali dive sites.

And whether you've come back to flop on your bed after a day spent surfing and shopping, or are yet to rouse yourself from your room, the stylish suites are sure to please. Our top tip: plump for the Luxe Suite for a freestanding bath tub on the cusp of the bedroom. Go on, you'll love it.

Stayed on

We loved

Butler Service - very attentive and helpful! The spa treatments are also amazing.

Don’t expect

The pool is not in the hotel, it is about a 3 minute walking distance away and does not have a view.

Butler service - very attentive and helpful.

Don’t expect

The rooms could be a bit bigger but the use of space in the room is very efficient.

We loved

The service was amazing.

Don’t expect

Occasionally the logistics of breakfast delivery in the morning caused a slight hiccup, but the servers smiled their way through it and tried to fix things as quickly as posible.

We loved

The room was very well-appointed. The pool was a nice, quiet haven and the staff were friendly.

Don’t expect

Breakfast was pretty average. It was slightly overbearing having quite so many staff. Each butler went out of their way to help, which was good but they changed so often that constant questioning "is-everything-alright-ing" made it more stressful than it needed to be.

We loved

It was very personalised and quirky. I like the butler's uniform – they shld sell it as I would have bought the shorts! Stylish! It is a great little hotel. I especially love the monkey towels and the goldfish to keep solo travellers company.

Don’t expect

I find it a strain to put my makeup on as I have to twist my body to face the wall mirror which is at a right angle to the wash basin. Can a magnified wall-mounted side make-up mirrior (on a swivel) be installed? That would be perfect if so.
